Maskne is the new acne + treatments that help

Call it a sign of the times, maskne is acne and irritation from wearing a mask, and it’s a real thing! I’m experiencing it myself from wearing a mask for long periods of time. I can feel the friction from my N-95 Mask after several hours of wearing it. Masks can worsen existing skin issues or cause new ones.

Here are some acne-fighting tips to help you combat this new thing called, “MASKNE”:
1. Consider the type of mask you wear
The more breathable the material, the better. I am currently switching over to a silk face mask myself. They are breathable, moisture-wicking, and cause less damage to our skin’s moisture barrier. Not to mention that they are so much more comfortable to wear compared to other masks I’ve tried. I have these silk masks for sale for $20 plus tax for those of you who may be interested.

2. Streamline your skin care routine

Adopt the most basic skincare routine to troubleshoot the problem. Start with a gentle cleanser, such as PCA Skin Care’s Creamy Cleanser; it provides a gentle cleanse, removes dirt oil and debris as well as makeup, and keeps the moisture barrier protected and balanced. Double cleansing your skin will assure that your skin is nice and clean for your next step, which would be PCA Skin Care’s Nutrient Toner; not only does it smell delicious, the pumpkin wine base in this toner is full of antioxidants and enzymes that help balance, nourish and kill any bacteria beneath the skin. Lastly, moisturizing your skin is vital. PCA Skin Care’s Clearskin Moisturizer is a nourishing light hydrator that calms and soothes normal to oily, break-out prone and sensitive skin. It also provides a protective barrier between your skin and your mask to help with any friction caused by the mask’s pressure. These 3 Items can be purchased in a bundle on my website at a discounted price for those of you who are interested (normally $125 – now $100).

3. Break up with makeup (at least temporarily)

And if you can’t go without makeup, then at least do your skin a favor and use the only pure and clean jane iredale skincare makeup foundation to avoid clogging pores and suffocating your skin. It’s also a good idea to wash your face after you work out and wash the makeup off your face as soon as possible at the end of your workday to avoid further break-out and issues. jane iredale has an amazing array of skincare foundation options to give you the perfect finish for your skin type. I also offer complimentary color-matching with every purchase to get you the perfect color match.

These products are available for purchase in my online shopping cart.

How to treat it if you get it

Now is not the time to make any drastic changes in your skincare routine. Remember that acne treatments can be irritating, especially if you must continue to wear a mask daily for prolonged periods of time. This is not your ordinary acne; with Maskne, you have to be really careful. I can help set you up with an appropriate skin care routine based on your skin type and needs – reach out. I have an arsenal of products to choose from to fit your needs perfectly.

If break-outs continue

If you have tried all the above and your acne persists, you may want to look at two other acne causes: Stress and Diet. Sleepless nights and comfort foods are not doing us any favors. Try changing your diet, getting some exercise, drinking plenty of water, and rest. Hopefully, this will help improve your Maskne, and if not, you can always come in to see me for a facial!
